Barclays Blended Scotch Whisky is made from specially selected vattings of wood matured whiskies, containing spring water drawn from a remote Highland Glen.
Barclays tried and trusted formula guarantees its consistency and unique character – true to the proud tradition of whisky craftsmanship developed over many generations.
Appearance:
Deep amber, mahogany lights
Aroma (unreduced):
The nose is rich and rounded, with good whisky identity and well-integrated aromatics. The top nose is estery (pear drops, acetone), which indicates a substantial quantity of Speysides in the blend. It is lightly sherried, and there is a trace of peat smoke, suggesting that some Islay malt has been used.
Aroma (reduced):
Water opens up the aromas, bringing out the fruity, estery character and developing an attractive freshness. This is balanced by a distinct scent of treacle, which suggests maturation in Sherry oak casks. The maturity of the constituent whiskies comes over in light wood shavings and cardboard notes.
Flavour:
The mouth feel is smooth and viscous, full and rich. The primary taste is sweet, with a hint of smoke in the finish. The overall taste is sweet, with a hint of smoke in the finish. The overall taste recollects the toffee noted on the nose, indeed, the flavour is a good extension of what is promised by the nose. The finish is lengthy.
Comment:
Barclays is a first rate whisky, in blind tastings it would rate as a deluxe. It has a richness which can only be described as “old-fashioned” and which has been blended out of most premium-standard blends today. Although there is no statement of age there can be no doubt that very much older whiskies have gone into the mix.
